WAGE RANGE: $33.940 TO $39.070 per hour

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Functioning as a team player, the Laboratory Assistant - Core Laboratory will support all staff in the provision of quality Laboratory services within the scope of the role. This includes performing phlebotomy, technical and non-technical procedures, as well as using HIS and LIS systems, including Cerner Millenium as required, while working under the direct supervision of a Registered Technologist, Laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant - Core Laboratory may perform cross-functional duties as required.

The Laboratory Assistant - Core Laboratory will focus on exceeding our patient/client needs and will support the mission, vision and values as determined by Niagara Health.

Candidates may include:
o Unregistered Medical Laboratory Technologists;
o Registered Medical Laboratory Technologists who are not currently practising; and
o Laboratory Assistants registered on the CMLTO voluntary roster including completion of 30 hours of professional continuing education per year

QUALIFICATIONS:
o Completion of a Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Assistant program from an accredited institution or completion of the discipline specific degree required
o Completion of Micro-Credential for MLA program required; offered by Michener Institute of Education or similar post secondary colleges
o Minimum 3 years of practical, related experience in a hospital setting Core Laboratory required
o Minimum 1 certification from CSMLS, MLPAO, CMLTO, CAMLPR or agency recognized by the Laboratory Licensing Branch of the Ministry of Health of the Province of Ontario required
o Demonstrated advanced skills in phlebotomy techniques for patients/clients of all ages
o Commitment to continuing education. i.e. completion of 30 hours of professional continuing education per year
o Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and operation required
o High proficiency with computer software/application (i.e.: Microsoft Office Suite)
o Ability to troubleshoot operational and workflow issues
o Knowledge of medical terminology
o Ability to identify and report workplace hazards and comply with required personal Protective equipment practices
o Knowledge of lab policy and procedures and accreditation (AcDx) requirements
o Excellent organizational, time management and prioritization skills
o Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills
o Good problem-solving skills with critical thinking
o Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment and under stressful situations
o Proven ability to function effectively as a member of multidisciplinary team and to work independently and collaboratively
o Excellent work performance and attendance required
