WAGE RANGE: 36.840 TO 50.240 per hour


POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Under the supervision of the Pathologists, the successful candidate will perform functions associated with grossing surgical specimens and autopsy assistance. The Pathology Assistant duties will include but not be limited to prepare specimens from biopsies, surgical procedures and autopsies including tissue examination, dissection, and macroscopic dictation. The successful candidate will maintain extensive knowledge in anatomy, pathology, cancer staging and ongoing competency. The successful candidate will function as a team player working with other laboratory staff and/or healthcare professional to achieve optimum operation of the Niagara Health Laboratory Medicine Program. The successful candidate's home site will be the Marotta Family Hospital - St. Catharines, and must be willing to work at two or more laboratory sites.

QUALIFICATIONS:
o Baccalaureate degree in Science with advance level courses in anatomy and physiology or Graduate of the Pathologist Assistant course or the equivalent in experience/training required (this may include an individual formally trained as a pathologist but does not currently have certification in Canada)
o Certified or the ability to become certified with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA)
o Previous Pathologist Assistant experience with large cancerous specimens preferred
o Flexibility to work both independently and as a direct assistant to the pathologists
o Previous autopsy experience is an asset
o Understanding of fixation and tissue structure preservation
o Understanding of block thickness and its impact on processing
o Knowledge of gross anatomy, gross pathology and medical terminology
o General knowledge of equipment used to perform job related functions which may include but are not limited to autopsy, dissection and laboratory-ware equipment
o Support and practice quality assurance and continuous quality improvement
o General knowledge of relevant chemicals
o Ability to perform gross photography
o Demonstrated effective organizational, interpersonal, communication, judgment and decision-making skills
o Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
o Flexible, self-directed and able to work effectively with minimal supervision
o Consistent and regular attendance required
o Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset
