POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Niagara Health is seeking an experienced Communications professional to work with us as we transform the way we deliver care through advancements in technology, specifically with the implementation of a Hospital Information System (HIS). The Senior Communications Specialist will mobilize integrated communications campaigns that exceed the needs of our internal and external stakeholders and enhance our service to the community.
Reporting into the Corporate Communications Department and under the direction of the HIS Project Director and Director of Communications, the Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for planning, co-ordinating and executing the communications strategy and tactics for the HIS project at Niagara Health and Hotel Dieu Shaver through the planning, implementation and stabilization phases of the project.
Supporting our growing focus on technological innovation, the incumbent should be adept at all aspects of strategic communications, including planning, relationship building, internal communications, change management, media relations, social media strategy and issues management.
The Senior Communications Specialist's exceptional writing, editing, speech writing and presentation skills, and ability to shape compelling content, will also be key factors in success.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Develop, co-ordinate and implement a work plan for the communication and promotion of the HIS project in consultation with the Project Leadership, Change Management specialist, and Corporate Communications Department.
o Integrate with the HIS project team to observe, learn and translate information into communications that appeal to various audiences throughout the organization and advance the HIS project objectives. This role requires the incumbent to work collaboratively with the project leadership team to develop communications that create a clear line of sight into the project's strategy, creating interest, engagement and understanding with stakeholders.
o Primary duties include developing content including news stories, key messages, newsletters, presentations and other communications deliverables; assisting in developing and maintaining the HIS project public web page and intranet site; providing strategic support in crafting town hall content and messages, including key messages and hot topics; monitoring project activities in order to identify opportunities for communications; updating the communications plan as needed; developing Board and executive presentations for the Executive Team and Project Director; serving as a strategic communications advisor to the project management team; serving as a communications lead for the core HIS project team.
o The successful candidate will be expected to build strong working relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the core team, liaise with external partners and community organizations and learn about best practices from the HIS vendor customer community.
o The successful candidate will also be expected to work with the Corporation Communications team to develop the intranet page to enhance customer experience and ensure that content is up to date and valuable.
o Remain current with frequent developments and trends in the communication field, including best practices in research and evaluation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
o Completion of an undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field. Member of Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) or International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)
o Minimum five years in a senior communications role within a large healthcare or unionized environment, preferably with a focus on technology, research and change management
o At least five years of experience developing and implementing measurable and engaging communications strategies for internal and external stakeholders, including strategies that support change processes and stakeholder engagement
o Proven ability to advise senior leaders on communications matters
o Demonstrated expertise managing complex communications issues, leading projects and planning special events
o Demonstrated expertise with media relations, social and digital media
o Demonstrated expertise tracking and reporting on meaningful metrics
o Advanced writing, editing, speech writing and presentation skills, and a natural talent for translating complex information into clear and compelling communication materials
o Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills; interpersonal and negotiation skills
o Strong proficiency with computer programs such as Internet, Email, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint) required. Experience with graphic design and/or desktop publishing
o Solid interpersonal and relationship building skills, and the ability to work in a respectful, cooperative team setting
o A results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage multiple deliverables simultaneously
o People and team oriented with a strong ability to establish an excellent level of confidence, credibility and cooperation with internal and external stakeholders
o Exceptional attention to detail and deadlines
o Highly creative
o Strong work ethic, service focused and responsive
o Commitment to ongoing professional development

o Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset
