POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Functioning as a team player, the Microbiology Medical Laboratory Technologist will support all staff in the provision of quality laboratory services to assist physicians and other health care providers in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
This includes performing quality laboratory testing according to legislative requirements in the following specialties: Microbiology and specimen collection and handling. The Medical Laboratory Technologist will focus on continuous monitoring and improvement of practices in order to meet or exceed our patient/client needs and will support the mission, vision and values as determined by the Niagara Health System while providing safe and competent patient/client care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
o Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology Program.
o Current registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario with license to practice relevant specialties in Laboratory Medicine.
o Minimum five years related clinical experience in a hospital environment of which at least three years must be recent experience in the required laboratory specialty area of Microbiology.
o Experience with testing and reporting a variety of specimen types including cultures from Urines, Stools, Miscellaneous - Wounds, Surveillance, Blood Cultures. Gram stain proficiency a must. Virology and PCR experience is an asset.
o Evidence of technical experience demonstrated by current/previous responsibility as an analyzer key operator.
o Evidence of commitment to advanced continuing education and professional development in Microbiology demonstrated by completion certificates for Microbiology courses
o Working knowledge of processing medical laboratory specimens
o Applies knowledge, skills, judgment and competencies required for safe, independent and inter-disciplinary practice by meeting professional standards as outlined by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario and related professional associations.
o Applies NHS values and professional practice standards to colleagues, patient/client care and service.
o Integrates reflection, critical thinking, education and relevant practical experience in problem solving.
o Working knowledge of computers, Laboratory Information Systems and other related Hospital systems.
o Commitment to pursue certification as a Laboratory Accreditation Assessor
o Proficiency in both official languages (English & French) will be considered an asset.
o Consistent and regular attendance required.
