POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Brain Stimulation Program Registered Nurse works directly with clients receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)and is responsible for all aspects of care from referral to discharge. This includes physical, mental status and cognitive assessments at intake, during the treatment phase and upon discharge; pre & post care of patients receiving treatment; assisting the psychiatrist directly with the procedure including data collection for research; patient and staff education; and any other duties required to support the ECT service.
The Brain Stimulation Nurse provides safe, competent and effective care in situations of health, illness and disability across the life continuum while promoting nursing excellence and high professional standards. The Registered Nurse provides care within a collaborative and inter-professional clinical team environment that reflects recovery/client-centered care principles and values. In the event there are no qualified applicants, this posting may be used as a training opportunity.
QUALIFICATIONS:
o Registration with the College of Nurse of Ontario (CNO) in good standing.
o Previous experience with electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation .
o Previous related clinical experience in a mental health setting.
o Demonstrated ability to complete physical, mental health and cognitive assessments.
o Demonstrated knowledge of psychotropic medication classes and medications used for ECT and TMS treatment.
o Preference will be given to candidates who have the Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Certification (CPMHN) and/or candidates willing to obtain this certification within 3 years.
o Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Standards for Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, as well as relevant legislation including the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
o Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate.
o Current SMG (Safe Management Group) or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
o Demonstrated knowledge of College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards of Practice and commitment to maintaining reflective practice standards as described by the CNO.
o Demonstrated commitment to professional development, ongoing education and integration of research into clinical practice.
o Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution and critical thinking skills.
o Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral/written communication skills.
o Ability to foster collaborative working relationships.
o Able to work both independently and as part of the inter-professional team.
o Applies Niagara Health values, professional practice standards, recovery/client-centered philosophy to patient care and service.
o Must be willing to work flexible hours to reflect patient population needs.
o Computer literacy is required.
o Consistent and regular attendance required.
o Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset.
