POSITION OBJECTIVE:
This leadership position is responsible/accountable to assist the ICU Clinical Manager, ICU Staff and Physicians in directing, organizing and coordinating patient care within the Intensive Care Unit to promote excellence, quality patient/client care, patient flow, communication, patient/staff safety and advocacy. Performance in this role is congruent with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards of Practice, ICU Program Standards and policies/procedures of Niagara Health. The Charge Nurse will demonstrate and provide a positive leadership perspective, promote optimal allocation/utilization of resources, act as a resource to nursing colleagues in the provision of safe and therapeutic patient centered care, work with staff to ensure standards of care are met through role modeling and consultation, promote and maintain excellent inter/intradepartmental communications, execution of positive intervention strategies, participate in strategies to enhance standardization of policies, procedures and processes between sites. The Charge Nurse will also possess the skills, competencies and knowledge to assume patient care at any level in the ICU.
QUALIFICATIONS:
o Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
o Minimum five years related clinical experience of which, at least two years must be in a critical care environment.
o Current BCLS and ACLS certification.
o Critical Care Certificate and or Critical Care Designation(CNA).
o Controlled acts authorized to nursing in the critical care setting and/or delegated controlled acts.
o Current knowledge and understanding of the Standards for Critical Care Nursing in accordance with the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses (CACCN).
o Demonstrated knowledge and skill in physical assessment (Physical Assessment Course preferred).
o Arterial line monitoring, management of cardiac and or respiratory arrest and ROSC.
o Knowledge and experience with cardiac monitoring and interpretation including; hemodynamic monitoring, 12 lead ECG interpretation, defibrillation, cardioversion, pacing and mechanical ventilation.
o Demonstrated proficiency in IV Therapy Initiation, direct IV drug administration, vasoactive and emergency medications.
o Knowledge and experience with advanced pain management, including epidurals and pain pumps.
o Excellent organizational, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
o Demonstrated knowledge of CNO Standards of Practice.
o Demonstrated ability to integrate model of Interprofessional Collaboration in an ICU setting.
o Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of ICU Nurse specific competencies and roles.
o Demonstrated initiative to participate in Continuing Education, Program Activities, Committees, Inservices.
o Demonstrated leadership skills (leadership courses an asset).
o Demonstrated team approach, excellent customer services skills and professional demeanor with internal and external partners.
o Demonstrated ability to respond appropriately to a crisis situation in a leadership capacity.
o Demonstrated ability to embrace and promote change in a positive manner.
o Knowledge of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
o Knowledge of patient safety management (ie; physicial restraints procedures and protocols).
o Applies knowledge, skills, judgment and competencies required for safe, independent and inter-disciplinary practice by meeting nursing practice standards as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and related professional associations.
o Working knowledge of computers.
o Proficient computer skills including successful completion of the RAI: Resident Instrument Assessment training.
o Consistent and regular attendance required.
o Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a new hire requirement of the job unless you have an exemption based on medical or on a ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code
