POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Working to promote nursing excellence, quality patient/client-centered care and high professional standards, the Registered Nurse will be responsible for the assessment, care and follow-up of patients who are receiving treatment with a long-acting injectable medication or Clozapine. The successful applicant will provide nursing expertise, informed by best practices, and leadership in collaborating with interprofessional service providers to ensure that care is coordinated and patient outcomes optimized.
QUALIFICATIONS:
o Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
o Must have 2 years (in the past 5 years) of clinical experience working with individuals living with serious and persistent mental health issues in a mental health inpatient/outpatient and/or community-based setting.
o Current BCLS certification.
o Current Safe Management Group and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification specific to Mental Health Nursing.
o Proficient in conducting comprehensive mental health assessments including mental status examination, suicide risk assessment, violence risk assessment and knowledgeable in the development of plans of care for clients with serious and persistent forms of mental illness.
o Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacology, particularly long-acting injectable medication and Clozapine.
o Knowledgeable and proficient in assessing for side effects of long-acting injectable medication or Clozapine including use of structured tools such as the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS).
o Knowledgeable and proficient in conducting metabolic screening and monitoring.
o Preference will be given to candidates who have obtained the Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Certification.
o Knowledge and understanding of Canadian Standards for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing and Core Competencies for Psychiatric Nursing.
o Working knowledge of assessment and treatment of substance use and concurrent disorders.
o Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of recovery principles.
o Demonstrated knowledge of individual-based models of counseling interventions (IMR, CBT, DBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness etc.) is an asset.
o Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act and all applicable legislation including the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
o Applies Niagara Health values and professional practice standards to patient/client care and service.
o Demonstrated commitment to patient/client centered care.
o Demonstrated commitment to patient and family education and the ability to promote health and wellness.
o Evidence of accurate, timely, and appropriate documentation according to best practice guidelines and CNO standards.
o Applies knowledge, skills, judgment and competencies required for safe, independent and inter-disciplinary practice by meeting nursing practice standards as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and related professional associations.
o Integrates reflection, critical thinking, education and relevant practical experience in problem solving.
o Demonstrates ability to work independently and part of inter-professional team.
o Effective communicator both oral and written.
o Proficient in organizational skills while managing a caseload of clients, ranging in complexity.
o Computer literacy and proficiency (Outlook, word etc.) is required.
o Consistent and regular attendance required.
o Proficiency in both official languages (English & French) will be considered an asset.
o Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a new hire requirement of the job unless you have an exemption based on medical or on a ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code
