POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Working to promote nursing excellence, quality client centered care and high professional standards, the Nurse Practitioner (Extended Class) will work as an integral member of the Central Access to Psychiatric Services (CAPS) and the Urgent Access Clinic providing psychiatric consultation, education and support to clients, families and care givers within the Mental Health and Addictions Program. The NP-EC will provide leadership, expert practice, education, consultation and research within a collaborative and interprofessional clinical team environment that reflects recovery/client-centered principles and values and other duties as assigned by the Clinical Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
o Registration in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Nurses - Extended Class License.
o Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Master's degree preferred.
o Successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner program from a recognized university.
o Minimum of three years' related clinical experience in mental health.
o Demonstrated knowledge of CNO Standards of Practice and commitment to maintaining reflective practice standards as described by CNO.
o Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate.
o Current SMG (Safe Management Group) or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
o Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Standards of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, as well as relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
o Preference will be given to candidates who have the Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Certification (CPMHN) or to candidates willing to obtain certification within three (3) years.
o Knowledge of assessment and management for clients with complex mental health issues, inclusive of addictions/concurrent disorders.
o Demonstrated clinical leadership skills to organize and coordinate the care of clients in collaboration with the inter-professional care providers within a medical/surgical environment.
o Demonstrated commitment to professional development, ongoing education, quality improvement and integration of research into clinical practice.
o Ability to promote professional education and advanced knowledge through research and the evaluation/quality improvement activities related to the care of clients throughout the healthcare continuum.
o Demonstrated ability to conduct advanced focus of comprehensive health history, mental health and addictions assessment (including mental status examination, suicide and risk/threat assessment) and physical health assessment with identification of health needs and formulation of evidence-informed plan of care.
o Advanced knowledge of trauma-informed practices.
o Ability to be self-directed in clinical practice as required in the areas of assessment, diagnosis and therapeutics.
o Ability in areas relative to documentation, data collection and outcomes evaluation.
o Demonstrated organizational, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and critical thinking skills.
o Excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral/written communication skills.
o Applies Niagara Health values, professional practice standards, recovery/client-centered philosophy to patient care & service.
o Must be willing to work flexible hours to reflect patient population needs.
o Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation as inter-site visits are required.
o Consistent and regular attendance is required.
