POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Working to promote nursing excellence, quality patient/client-centered care and high professional standards, the Registered Nurse will be responsible for the assessment, nursing diagnosis, integrated care plan development, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. The objective of the Registered Nurse is to collaborate and triage in the PES and ED for patients with complex mental illness. The RN provides safe, evidence-based therapeutic interventions across the care continuum. The RN completes assessments, plans and organizes treatment/therapeutic interventions, including documentation and evaluation of those interventions, models professional leadership and provides decision making support by collaborating and delegating within the inter-professional team. The RN will provide safe and competent care through the application of nursing knowledge, the technical aspects of professional practice and the demonstration of compassion, professionalism and respect. The incumbent will perform all other relevant duties assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the unit to which s/he is assigned. In the event there are no qualified applicants, this posting may be used as a training opportunity.
QUALIFICATIONS:
o Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
o A minimum of two years related clinical experience in acute mental health.
o Current Safe Management Group and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification specific to Mental Health Nursing.
o Current BCLS certification.
o Specialty certificate in Mental Health Nursing (CNA) preferred.
o Training in the appropriate use of restraints, practice standards, policy and current best practices in least restraint.
o Proficient in conducting comprehensive mental health assessments including mental status examination, trauma informed care, suicide risk assessment, violence risk assessment and knowledgeable in the development of crisis and discharge planning.
o Motivational interviewing, CBT training and experience triaging Mental Health patients in an Emergency Department.
o Knowledge and understanding of Canadian Standards of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and Core Competencies for Psychiatric Nursing.
o Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act and all applicable legislation including the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
o Demonstrated ability to respond appropriately to a crisis situation.
o Experience and confidence with de-escalating aggressive patients and potentially violent patients.
o Ability to multi task in a highly intense workplace environment.
o Able to make rapid decisions with sound judgement when multi challenges occur.
o Calm disposition when under prolonged pressure and demands of patients and staff.
o Knowledge of assessment of risk including Suicide Risk Assessment and Violence Assessment.
o Demonstrated ability to utilize holistic assessment skills and to develop an integrated patient/client centre plan of care.
o Applies Niagara Health values and professional practice standards to patient/client care and service.
o Demonstrated commitment to patient/client centred care.
o Applies leadership skills by providing, facilitating and promoting quality patient care.
o Demonstrated ability to perform effectively as most responsible nurse in a total patient care model.
o Demonstrated commitment to patient and family education and the ability to promote health and wellness.
o Evidence of accurate, timely and appropriate documentation according to best practice guidelines and CNO standards.
o Applies knowledge, skills, judgment and competencies required for safe practice as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
o Knowledge of interdisciplinary network of service providers, community based resources and support systems.
o Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships with inter-disciplinary service providers.
o Integrates reflection, critical thinking, education and relevant practical experience in problem solving.
o Consistent and regular attendance required.
o Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset.
