POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Working to promote excellence, quality patient/client care and high professional standards, the Anaesthestic Assistant is an integral member of the perioperative team the anesthesia assistant (AA) participates in the care of the patient during general, regional or local anesthesia. In addition to providing technical support to the anesthesiologist for complex anesthesia equipment, the anesthesia assistant administers anesthetic gases and medications, performs activities such as the provision of conscious sedation, and is responsible for the insertion and management of intravenous and arterial lines. The AA provides constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia using medical directives, as applicable. An AA's skills are required primarily within the pre-operative, surgical suite, and post-operative care areas, but also within clinical diagnostic areas where procedures using anesthesia are conducted. The AA is also an integral member of the allied health team to which there are accountabilities for professional practice, education and research. The incumbent will perform all other relevant duties assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the unit to which she/he is assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
o General license with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario or Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
o Basic Anaesthesia Assistant Certificate or equivalent required
o Membership in CAS recommended
o Successful completion of an Advanced Anaesthesia Assistance Certificate Program
o Two (2) years related clinical experience working as a Respiratory Therapist in the past six (6) years in critical care environment OR Two (2) years related clinical experience in the past six (6) years in an operating room
o Current BCLS certification
o Holds certificates in BCLS, ACLS and PALS
o Demonstrated proficiency performing advanced procedures such as arterial line insertion and IV insertion
o Evidence of continuing education
o Applies knowledge, skills, judgment and competencies required for safe, independent and inter-disciplinary practice by meeting professional practice standards as outlined by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario or College of Nurses of Ontario related professional associations

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
